The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist a binding element holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.
The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback
One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to stay there for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Finding His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
