Our Leading Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Top Spot.

On the surface, Lux could seem more like an arduous scholarly quiz rather than a new popular music album by a musician who just had a last hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Broken into four distinct parts and sung in thirteen languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged work investigating feminine mystery, religious ascent, and physical change, often via the perspective of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, supported by the constant sound of a full orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among a long list of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the efforts of other artists seem quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, and full praise going to the artist. Although this is not her first album to alchemize the past with modern styles, its ambitions are far greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. The element that really elevates her fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Similar to the iconic artist during her peak, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. When she is tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless want to be alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during the stunning piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for several minutes. Then, everything drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes in like cartoonish force. The track then shifts to the frenetic single driven by racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with Lux lies in the listener never quite understand—nor wish to predict—what it will go to next."

Nearly each song finishes at a totally distinct place than how it began. One moment examines the transient trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work begins off moody and sinister, with menacing vocals, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to soften the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

A key balancing act on the album is navigating the gap of bold innovation and broad appeal. It is no surprise that the album has become her first release to break into the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spins upward. This feat is repeated on another expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of other breakup anthems, lambasting a former partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for high artistry amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of hidden gems that requires time to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While some major releases of the year felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a lavish feast at which the guests at the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
