TikTok Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Slimming Drug

A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Acquiring Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.

Active Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators attempt to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Response and Content Elimination

According to TikTok, the service has taken down violative content and banned associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and detailed guides for preparing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Details and Pricing

Within these groups, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a injector should be used, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored harmful content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current price rises for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
